Distribution by the family. §§ Hardbound in near fine condition, 119 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE, CONTENTS, ILLUSTRATIONS, EXTRACTS FROM NEWSPAPER and PERIODICALS, LETERS OF SYMPATHY FROM PERONAL and BUINESS FRIENDS, measures approximately 6 ½” x 9 ¾”, no dust jacket. The boards are covered in quarter-board fashion with leather to the spine and tan paper to the remainder of the board surfaces. The title is blind stamped on the spine in gold, still quite legible, surfaces clean. Wear and bruising to the paper covered points is noted with some toeing in but the surfaces and edges are otherwise in exceptionally good condition. The interior reveals clean contents with gold page tops and an uncut vertical and lower edge, no loose or misaligned pages. The end page hinges display ¾ cracks in several pages and these have been reinforced with acid-free mending tissue. The book is printed on quality, heavy weight stock, likely cotton. Numerous photo plates are listed in the Illustration list, each covered with a sheet of glassine upon which the photo title is printed so that no printing is present on the plate itself. The contents are impeccably clean for a volume of nearly 100 years with no noticeable age toning, no foxing and no marks, creases, tears or previous owner indications. This was a biography-type memoir written by the subject’s son, Arthur D. Henry Perrine Baldwin was the sixth child of missionaries, perhaps best know for having developed the Hamakua Ditch that facilitated the development of the cane industry on Maui. Baldwin with entrepreneuring Honolulu affiliates is credited for having developed the Haleakela Ranch. The book is well illustrated with photos of Maui, and the family with subjects being identified, including many of Henry Perrine Baldwin through the years, each specifying his age at the time of the sitting. A truly rare publication, printed in limited numbers to accommodate family members only. The book was reprinted as a paperback in recent years for historical purposes, however, original printings such as this are truly rare indeed.
