I have always been intrigued when it comes to old, leather-bound books, particularly pertaining to the occult and esotericism. Old, dusty, wooden library shelves cramped with even older tomes containing within their pages countless centuries of wisdom makes me feel at home. The hunt for that one, special book, which always seems to elude the hunter until it is ready to be found, can be such a driving force. Upon my first viewing of Roman Polanski’s 1999 film “The Ninth Gate”, I was taken in, hook, line, and sinker. The libraries depicted within the film; the passions each owner held for their lifetime of collections; and of course, the one tome which stood above all the rest, “De Umbrarum Regni Novem Portis”, translated as “The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows”. I had to own a copy for myself. A “complete” and “proper” edition, worthy of itself. I spent the next several years researching everything I could find pertaining to this work. I found other folks out there creating their own versions had poor image quality, improper Gate orders, mutilated Latin translations, and even mismatched signatures for certain Gates. This tome had to be brought to fruition, and it needed to be done properly. I decided, seeing as the Latin filler text in the book was just that, filler text, repeated and garbled “mumbo jumbo” over and over throughout the book, I would remove its unneccessity. I wanted to end up with 3 identical copies, an extremely rare edition indeed. Each would have an intro page, the Title page of course, the nine Gates signed by “LCF”, followed by a “bridge” page, the nine Gates signed by “AT”, and closed up with the ninth Gate “LCF” forgery. Each Gate would have a corresponding title and translation page and after each Gate would be 16 blank pages of which the owner could use at their own discretion. I wanted to create a sort of “Book of Shadows” and join it within the Gates to form a kind of “Grimoire”. So, I set off; off on a journey which would take me down some most interesting roads. I painstakingly captured and restored the proper woodcut engravings for each Gate, both signed “LCF” and “AT”, and remastered them in high definition 2400 x 4684 scale. I completed my layout and set out to find someone who would print and bind this work for me. Most, interestingly enough, would not touch my project due to “the nature of its content”. Some were too “busy” or didn’t handle projects of this small scale. Finally, I found one whom I thought would be the perfect individual to aid me in my quest. An old-world craftsman, using century old tools; a man that shared my interests and passions for this work. He lived a world away from me and had absolutely no computer skills whatsoever. His wisdom and dialect for what he knew, however, was beyond my scope. He printed one copy of my book, sewed the pages together, designed the symbol for the book’s cover, began the case-making, and then sadly, passed away. I was informed a year later that my unfinished project was still on his bench, the last book he would ever touch. The world lost a true wizard in his craft that day. Back to the “drawing board” as it were. I endured many more failed attempts while seeking help bringing this tome to life. Finally, like so many times throughout my lifetime, I decided if you want something done, sometimes you need to put your nose to the grind and get it done yourself. How do I sew? How do I bind? What tools do I use? What leather do I choose? I forced myself through a crash-course training. My wife stepped in to help, lending her past knowledge of binding and giving an extra set of hands. Making several “lesser” books as testing projects taught me the do’s and don’ts and helped me in trying to perfect this craft. Finally, with abated breath and (I will be honest) trembling hands, I took the leap and dove into the Nine Gates. The paper is Mohawk Cream, 80# cover, giving the pages a perfect “feel” and removing the fear of possible bleed-through. I used 3/16 LuAnn (floor underlayment) for my cover boards as this should never warp and is extremely strong and durable. I chose 1.2 mm top grain leather for my binding (Why cheapen out now for three books that took me so many years to complete). Black silk Moire end pages were added. I use only the best products recommended by other bookbinding enthusiasts. The book has 324 pages with a total of 280 blank pages placed evenly throughout. The final measurements are 9 1/4″ Tall X 6 1/’4″ Wide X 2 1/8 Thick. The pentagram on the cover is 3 of solid, cut brass. Upon completing my first copy, I sat for a great while, staring at the product of my labor and years of a dream come finally to fruition. I made only three, keeping true to my word and my original goal. The first copy will obviously never leave my home. I offer to you now. This book is hand-numbered “2”. I have done the same with the other book, hand-numbered “3”. No more will be produced or available by me. I can sign and personalize the book upon request. I thank you for your time and consideration.
