Limited edition full facsimile, copy number 532 from. Copies, together with its accompanying commentary. Both volumes housed in a decorated Slip Box. Lovely binding, blind decorated terracotta calf, with three-sided gilt edging. The main volume is in full leather, whereas the commentary volume is quarter leather, with boards matching slip box colour. Facsimile illustrated in colour throughout, and printed in high quality, circa 240 pages. Commentary in German by. Condition: Very good condition. Previous owner’s ex-libris sticker and inscription (stamp and signature). The original of the facsimile manuscript is in the possession of the Saltykow Stschedrin State Public Library in Leningrad. It is stored under the signature Lat. The elaborate prayer book was designed by the French master Jean Colombe and the employees of his studio. The artists based their work on the paintings of Jean Bourdichon, one of the most influential book illustrators of the French Middle Ages. The work was created in 1490. It was signed by Louis, Duke of Orléans from the House of Valois. Louis was crowned King Louis XII of France in 1498. Louis XII was known as a great lover and patron of the arts. Some of the most outstanding illuminated manuscripts in France were created on his commission. The illumination of the small manuscript is really extraordinary because of its sophisticated image concept, especially in the biblical series of motifs, which are extremely rare in books of hours, as well as because of the magnificent floral decorations on the pages.

Leather-bound, in two volumes, hardcover, quarto (24.5cm x 19cm), pp. English text, with an introduction by John W. Handsomely rebound in half leather, blue cloth sides, top edges gilt. Woodcut frontispiece and title-page, 25 woodcut illustrations, 11 bifolia, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, ornaments, and borders throughout. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Bindings square and firm, trivial marks to covers, spines lightly sunned, contents very well-preserved and without previous ownership markings. Notes: The edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent’s edition of Le Morte d’Arthur (1894-95), illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley, and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene, illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. A 1901 profile by the Society of Designers declares that he has always had a strong bent towards the straightforward methods of the early painters. As witness the beautiful designs for his well-known edition of the’Faerie Queene,’ which fully express his natural admiration of the early Italian work p. A SPECIAL EDITION LOUIS VUITTON, EPI LEATHER IN GREEN, LARGE’REPERTOIRE’ ADDRESS BOOK. This stunning piece was produced as a limited edition commemorative for the Louis Vuitton automotive Concours D’elegance at the Hurlingham Club. On June 13th 1992. The first year the event was held in London (the inaugural event having taken place the year before at Stowe School). Finished in stunning Green Epi leather, the fold-over folio cover is sized to accept the address book on the right side, whilst offering a large flap opening and wide slot opening on the left side. A fabulous and very rare piece for the truly committed LV collector! In excellent clean condition – never used. The leather cover is absolutely spotless, no scuffs, scratches or pulled threads etc. The insert book is of course free of any annotations & the gilt edge to the pages still bright. (There is just a slight crease to the rear lower corner, from where it has sat in the card outer sleeve).
