Andrew Hodges – Alan Turing: The Enigma – Burnett Books 1983 – First Edition. A first edition, first impression biography of the British mathematician, codebreaker, and early computer scientist, Alan Turing, written by Andrew Hodges. The book covers Alan Turing’s life and work. Many of us may be familiar with the 2014 film The Imitation Game, which is loosely based on the book, with dramatization. Publisher’s original binding with some bumping to corners, as well as head and tail of spine. Boards and spine clean, with gilt title to spine ever-so-lightly rubbed. Tanning to edges and prelims with few, if any, signs of foxing. Pages tightly bound with none loose. Ex-library copy, therefore it comes with stamp to bottom edge (National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex), ex-libris bookplate to front paste-down end paper, and stamp, date and inscription to FFEP. Otherwise an immaculate example within. Slight discolouration to spine and minimal creasing to extremities. Overall, with the exception of the ex-libris marks, a VG+ to near-fine example. Andrew Langs scarce & sort after large paper limited edition, No’34 of 113 copies. Of The Blue Fairy Book, 1st edition. The first of The Coloured fairy series of books. Original paper boards with the vellum spine, the spine is darkened with a central crease top to bottom and a little loss at the bottom, the front board is cracked along the hinge but holding strong, no tears to inner gutter, ex Libris bookplate to inner board, tissue paper to frontis & internally the book is extremely tight, probably unread, & in excellent condition. First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers’ Original Binding. Overall Condition: Very Good. This book weighs 0.75 KG when packed. Illustrated profusely throughout with four hundred monochrome illustrations including a frontispiece and an illustrated title page. This collection of artwork and pages from children’s books was collected by Andrew W. Tuer and aims to preserve the artwork and texts from works that may have been lost to time or forgotten. Publisher’s catalogue to the rear. In the publisher’s original cloth. Externally smart with bumping and slight rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Hinges starting with light offsetting and scattered spotting to the endpapers. Past owner’s ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Front free endpaper tender. Internally binding starting in places with two pages disbound but present. Fine – Very well preserved copy showing very little wear. Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones. Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy. Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will. Be described in the condition report under’condition. Good Only – Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair. As with good only above but with other faults. Leaving a compromised copy even after repair. Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete. Heavy foxing to the front and back inner covers/ flyleaf pages. Tanning to the pages. First edition first printing hardback 1983. Book cover boards are good but do have some edge and corner bumps.
