Rare 1929 Legion Book Signed Limited Edition
Rare 1929 Legion Book Signed Limited Edition. The Legion Book – Captain H. This is a very rare edition of The Legion Book. The Legion book was produced just after the First World War to help the wounded. The book was instigated as a result of the personal interest taken by H. The Prince of Wales, at whose invitation a number of well- known contributors were pleased to come forward to support this worthy cause. The book includes prose, literary and poetical contributions by such luminaries as Aldous Huxley, P. Wodehouse, vita Sackville West,’Sapper’ Hilaire Belloc, Winston Churchill, Rudyard Kipling and Edgar Wallace. Privately published, this first edition from 1929 is illustrated throughout with 11 half – tone plates and nine collotypes of famous dignitaries (Queen Mary, The Prince of Wales, Madame Suggia) by various notable artist of the day such as David Low, Eric Ravillious, Eric Gill, John Sergeant, Augustus John, William Rothenstein, Edward Bawden and Sir Bernard Partridge. All the collotypes are protected by captioned tissue guards. This book was issued as part of a limited edition print run of only 500 copies (This is No 358 of 600) and has been signed by Captain H. The book has also be signed on the title page by 14 crew members of the S. Baltic including the captain. It also had the singular distinction of transporting General John J. Pershing and the first American troops to France in 1917. Inserted in this book is an original menu card depicting the S. The book has bright, light brown coloured boards with gilt writing on the spine. There is also a gilt covering to the top text block edge. This is not an ex-library book, nor is it annotated with the usual markings of previous ownership although I strongly suspect it once belonged to one of the crew members of the S. This remarkable book is a nice, tight clean copy in fine condition. This item is in the category “Books, Comics & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectable”.
