A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights Entertainments. Is a celebrated English language translation of One Thousand And One Nights. (the Arabian Nights) a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. (8th 13th centuries) by the British explorer and Arabist Richard Francis Burton. It stood as the only complete translation of the Macnaghten or Calcutta II edition (Egyptian recension) of the “Arabian Nights” until the Malcolm C. And Ursula Lyons translation in 2008. Burton’s volumes, while boasting many prominent admirers, have been criticized for their “archaic language and extravagant idiom” and “obsessive focus on sexuality”; they have even been called an “eccentric ego-trip”. And a “highly personal reworking of the text”. His voluminous and obscurely detailed notes and appendices have been characterized as obtrusive, kinky and highly personal. Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton. Was an English geographer. Explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia, Africa and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian and African languages. Volume one (only) has a few roughly opened pages due to untrimmed pages. There is some fading to spines and browning to spine labels else the set condition is very good with no markings and only minor corner corner bumping on a few volumes.
