For sale is a limited edition hardback of “The Boxing Album: An Illustrated History” by Peter Brooke-Ball. This copy has been HAND SIGNED in black felt tip pen on the first blank pages by 22 boxers or professionals associated with the sport! Published by Smithmark in 1995. A limited edition of 12 signed copies was produced by The Boxing Hall of Fame, and their stamp appears on the last page. This is hand numbered #8 of 12. Binding is sound and pages are otherwise unmarked. Dust jacket shows some light shelf wear, and the remnants of an old price sticker still affixed to back cover. DJ is now protected in a clear, removable Brodart sleeve. While this does not come with a C. A, we have closely examined it and fully believe the signatures to be authentic. A 5 book lot of Ancient History Classics. Easton Press Collector’s Edition. The Leather-Bound Library of Military History. The War with Hannibal by Livy. Greek and Roman Navel Warfare by William Ledyard Rodgers. Navel Warfare Under Oars by William Ledyard Rodgers. The Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar. The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. The books are in excellent condition with one notable flaw; being that the page marking ribbons have been cut off. They are cleanly cut away at the top page edge, and in most cases are not noticeable. Each book includes the Collector’s Notes insert with information about the book and author. Each book contains a bookplate from the previous owner attached to the inside cover, who attached a sticker instead of signing. The stickers could probably be removed from the book plates but I have not tried. Also it should be noted, that many of the books have a tiny faint white circle at the top of the spines. It appears like they were marked with a small circular sticker and there is a bit of residue. Leather covers are in excellent condition, with the occasional shelving scratch, but overall they look wonderful. Interiors are clean and unmarked. Bindings snug and secure. Book ends are not included. Easton Press features include. Fully bound in genuine leather. 22kt gold deeply inlaid on the hubbed spine. Superbly printed on acid-neutral paper that lasts for generations. Sewn pages not just glued like ordinary books. Gilded page ends. Bound in the USA. Sir Jonathan Trelawny, 3rd Baronet (24 March 1650 19 July 1721) was a British Bishop of Bristol, Bishop of Exeter and Bishop of Winchester. Trelawny is best known for his role in the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution which are referenced in the Cornish anthem The Song of the Western Men. He was born at Trelawne in the parish of Pelynt, Cornwall. He was educated at Westminster Schooland then went to Christ Church, Oxford at the start of the Michaelmas term of 1668 where he distinguished himself as a scholar. A staunch royalist, he was ordained in 1673 and became a beneficed clergyman. He was appointed rector of South Hill on 4 October and of St. Ives on 12 December 1677, becoming Bishop of Bristol in 1685. He was one of the Seven Bishops tried under James II. Trelawny and the other bishops petitioned against James II’s Declaration of Indulgence in 1687 and 1688, (granting religious tolerance to Catholics) and as a result he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of seditious libel. The bishops said that whilst they were loyal to King James II, their consciences would not agree to allowing freedom of worship to Catholics even if it were to be within the privacy of their own homes as the Declaration proposed; thus they could not sign. Trelawny was held for three weeks before trial, then tried and acquitted; this led to great celebrations, with bells being rung in his home parish of Pelynt. Trelawny was rewarded in 1689 by being appointed Bishop of Exeter (whilst still, until 1694, Archdeacon of Totnes) after the military defeat of James II and the accession of the Protestant William of Orange to the British throne. He was further rewarded by being appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1707, although his promotion was a matter of some controversy, as Queen Anne, who was determined to keep all important Church appointments within her own gift, overruled the advice of her ministers and of Thomas Tenison, the Archbishop of Canterbury in appointing him, thus provoking the so-called Bishoprics Crisis. He died in 1721, in Chelsea, Middlesex; his body was brought back for burial to Pelynt in Cornwall. All plates have their original tissue guards. Fold-out chart is present in the rear pocket. Edition limited to 512 numbered sets worldwide. Book designed by Hans Mardersteig and printed at the Stamperia Valdonega, Verona, Italy. Original cloth slipcase, bound in green buckram, red gilt labels on spine, top edges gilt, with original glassine dust jackets glassine slightly yellowed and chipped at the spines. Smallest suggestion of wear, a surperb set. Gordon Wasson was an investment banker with J. Morgan, and with his wife Valentina Pavlovna spent twenty years researching and writing this encyclopedic work, incorporating ethnographic analysis, literature survey, and lore of the sacred psilocybe mushroom. The book recounts Wassons’ first encounter with Mazatec curandera (healer) Maria Sabina in the mountains of Southern Mexico and his first direct experience with psilocybe which led Wasson to conclude that mushrooms did possess magical powers. In the 1960’s it is alleged that the text inspired the’rediscovery’ of the magic mushroom by Timothy Leary and countless others during the worldwide psychedelic counterculture movements. It remains the most comprehensive and desirable publications concerning sacred (or magic) mushrooms. Published in 1957 and was co-written with Wasson’s wife Valentina. Wasson’s wife was a Russian who was raised in a Baltic country so there is an emphasis on Mushroom culture in Russia. Also chapters on famous murders by poisoning using mushrooms, the Toad and its relation in European folk beliefs to Mushrooms. It talks about how Toads and Mushrooms were seen as emissaries of satan after Christianity took hold in Europe. Plenty on the Mushroom as well. Plus its full of many beautiful full page plates of mushrooms and related artwork. Volume two has considerable information about indigenous culture in the mountains of Mexico and their religious use of Mushrooms. There are also photos of ceremonies as well as even more details of mushrooms in Europe and mushroom related art.
