A must have for any collector! History: The Kell’s Manuscript is one of the most renowned illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. Tentatively dated to the year 800 AD, the Book resided at the eponymous Abbey of Kells for many centuries before it was moved, in 1654. The text of the Book is largely taken from the Vulgate, a fourth century Latin translation of the Bible, though it includes several passages derived from the earlier Vetus Latina. It contains the four Gospels. The book was largely sacramental. It would have likely been displayed during Mass, rather than used for close examination. Insular art combined both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon visual elements to create a new hybrid style. Where its contemporary, the Byzantine style, sought to portray realistic three-dimensional forms, the Insular Style saw a flattening of human and animal forms. There was also a new focus on intricate patterning, heavily influenced by elite metalwork of the area. These formal elements can be clearly seen in the dense ornamentation on a majority of the folios in the The Kell’s Manuscript. Our reproduction is of the The Kell’s Manuscript in its entirety. 678 full color pages of this magnificent masterpiece. Reproduction details: This facsimile measures 11.25 inches tall by 9 inches wide and the spine is 4 inches thick. Weight is 9.2 pounds. Our hardcover books are made with 2oz genuine cowhide upholstery leather from a small farm located in the United States. The pages are printed on 67lb cover acid free paper (business card thickness). We use a 4 color digital offset press. Each book is hand sewn by our trained bookbinders using a library binding method. This method will ensure a strong, sturdy, and lasting book for generations to come. We currently have a 4-6 week lead time for all orders. A BOOK OF SATYRS Austin Osman Spare (1907, 1st ED) Occult Art Aleister Crowley
Faustus Antiquarian (Bookseller) is offering for sale. Co-operative Printing Society Limited, 1907. Large, folio edition (17.25 inches x 13 inches). Heavy boards with title and illustration to cover. 1/4 bound with vellum parchment spine. Eleven full page beautifully rendered illustrations, decorative title page, accompanying smaller illustrations plus an introduction by James Guthrie. EDITION OF 300 copies only, which came signed and numbered by Spare, but for some reason this copy was not signed or numbered. This book was acquired from the collection of noted artist, occultist and Austin Osman Spare collector, Stafford Stone. Condition: Vellum parchment spine is rather rubbed and discoloured with a few creases. Rubbing also to board edges and corners. A few cosmetic knocks and blemishes to heavy boards — more prominent on the back-cover board. As is usual with Spare’s art books — there is some slight shadowing of the plates upon the blank page opposite. Some light foxing and darkening of page edges to artist print paper. Overall a very good copy of this rare first edition. Have a look at our other auctions for rare occult books, both contemporary and antiquarian, plus other esoteric items. Book of Lost Tales V. 1&2, Unfinshed Tales J. R. R, Tolkien (2003 Leather Easton)
The Book of Lost Tales, Parts 1 & 2, Unfinshed Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth – J. R. R, Tolkien (2003 Leather Easton). The Book of Lost Tales was the first major work of imagination by J. Tolkien, begun in 1916, when he was twenty-five years old, and left incomplete several years later. It stands at the beginning of the entire conception of Middle-earth and Valinor that came to be called The Silmarillion. Embedded in English legend and English association, they were set in the narrative frame of a great westward voyage over the Ocean by a mariner named Eriol (or Ælfwine) to Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, where Elves dwelt; from them he learned their true story, the Lost Tales of Elfinesse. In the Tales are found the earliest accounts and original ideas of Gods and Elves; Dwarves and Orcs; the Silmarils and the Two Trees of Valinor; Nargothrond and Gondolin; and the geography and cosmology of the invented world. The Book of Lost Tales is published in two volumes. The first contains the Tales of Valinor; and the second past includes Beren and Luthien, Turin and the Dragon, and the only full narratives of the Necklace of the Dwarves and the Fall of Gondolin. Each tale is followed by a commentary, together with associated poems, and each volume contains extensive information on names and vocabulary of the earliest Elvish languages. Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read The Lord of the Rings with a whole collection of background and new stories from the twentieth century’s most acclaimed popular author. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as Gandalf’s lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. Unfinished Tales also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the PalantÍri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were collated and edited by J. Tolkien’s son and literary heir, Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father’s writings. These three volumes are presented here in classic Easton Press style, leather bound , gilt edged , finely illustrated and printed on acid-neutral paper with ribbon markers. It doesn’t get much better than this! And see my other Easton Press titles here. International buyers may pay extra. The item “Book of Lost Tales V. 1&2, Unfinshed Tales J. R. LANGUAGE: LATIN AND OLD FRENCH. REPRODUCTION DIMENSIONS: 11.75 X 8.75 IN. THIS FINELY ILLUMINATED BOOK OF HOURS WAS MADE IN ENGLAND AT THE END OF THE 13TH CENTURY. THE MANUSCRIPT IS INCOMPLETE AND MIS-BOUND. THE ORIGINAL SEQUENCE OF THE PARTS OF THE MANUSCRIPT CANNOT BE RECONSTRUCTED WITH CERTAINTY. THE ABBREVIATED HOURS WERE FOLLOWED BY THE HOURS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE SEVEN PENITENTIAL PSALMS, THE LITANY AND COLLECTS, THE FIFTEEN GRADUAL PSALMS, THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD, AND THE HOURS OF JESUS CRUCIFIED. WHETHER THE PRAYERS TO THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST, WHICH WERE FOLLOWED BY THE LECTIONS IN THE LIFE OF SAINT CATHARINE, CAME BEFORE OR AFTER THIS SEQUENCE IS UNKNOWN. THE BOOKS MAIN ARTIST ALSO ILLUMINATED A BIBLE NOW HELD IN THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY AT OXFORD MS. 3.2, AND A PSALTER PRESERVED AT TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE MS. THE MANUSCRIPT CONTAINS A NUMBER OF UNUSUAL TEXTS, INCLUDING THE HOURS OF JESUS CRUCIFIED AND THE OFFICE OF SAINT CATHERINE. THE TEXT OF THE FORMER HAS BEEN SCRAMBLED. THE PATRON OF THE MANUSCRIPT IS NOT CLEAR; A WOMAN IS DEPICTED AS PRAYING IN MANY OF THE INITIALS, BUT RUBRICS IN THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD MENTION FRÈRES (BROTHERS).
