An opulently illuminated gem of Flemish Renaissance book illumination for an unknown patron: 63 breathtakingly beautiful full-page miniatures and 350 vibrant borders by four important Bruges masters. One of the outstanding jewels in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge: the so-called Fitzwilliam Book of Hours. This masterpiece is a manuscript created in Bruges at the beginning of the 16th century, which features 63 full-page miniatures. These are impressive in their high-quality execution and varied design. Four important painters were involved in the execution. And every viewer will immediately realize that this must have been the work of a high-ranking – albeit unknown – patron. An impressive work from the heyday of Flemish book painting! A total of 63 full-page miniatures are spread over the 370 pages of the Fitzwilliam Book of Hours. These are surrounded by beautiful borders and make this valuable manuscript something special. In addition, each page of text is decorated with a border filled with floral ornamentation and the like. Varied colored initials round off this homogeneous visual impression wonderfully. Michael, the so-called Master of Add. 15677 should be mentioned in particular ; he takes his name from a manuscript attributed to him in the British Library.

Full-size color reproduction of the entire original document, manuscript Barb. 487, The Barberini Book of Hours for Rouen: the facsimile attempts to replicate the look-and-feel and physical features of the original document; pages are trimmed according to the original format. Facsimile and commentary (2 volumes). Leather binding with rich cover, spine and back cover ornamentation with gold stamping in a jewelry slipcase; 3-sided gilt edging. 17 full-page and 44 smaller miniatures, excellently executed and richly decorated with raised gold, as well as numerous decorative initials. An overwhelming wealth of motifs and their variations also characterize the 193 wonderful borders. Limited edition: only 1200 copies. This copy is number 358. Condition: As good as new copy. Language of Commentary: German. ABOUT THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. Made in France around 1510, the Barberini Book of Hours for Rouen is a colorful and multifaceted example of private devotional book decorated in a style between late Gothic and northern Renaissance. Its over 100 parchment folios boast 17 full-page miniatures, 44 illuminated scenes, and almost 200 borders glowing with the most exquisite floral and architectural motifs. The Latin codex, penned in Gothic bastard script, contains a book of hours in the use of Rome and a calendar for Rouen written in French. The illuminators merged old French tradition with new inspiration imported from Italy, as well as Flemish influences, which is visible especially in the borders, so colorful and filled with such intensely depicted flowers that one would think it possible to pick them from the page. All borders are adorned in multiple styles ranging from late Gothic – geometric shapes filled with crosses, hearts, and fleur-de-lis – to Renaissance – architecture elements, fountains, heads. Marvelously decorated initials enriched with gold leaf and outlined in black on intense blue ground mark the beginning of psalms, readings, and prayers. The rubrics, also penned in blue, and the sepia brown text, enhance the folios’ elegance, together with innumerable line-fillers decorated in blue, brown, and burnished gold. Some of the decorated initials are large and feature flower and acanthus motifs. When the library was included in the Vatican Library, the Book of Hours was added to its collection.

The Black Book of Hours – Limited Edition Facsimile – As New. Full-size color reproduction of the entire original document, the facsimile attempts to replicate the look-and-feel and physical features of the original document; pages are trimmed according to the original format. Published by Faksimile Verlag – Luzern, 2001. 242 pages, 17 x 12 cm. Limited to 980 copies – This is number 332. Binding: The binding from the 20th century that currently protects the manuscript has been replaced by a correspondingly magnificent black velvet binding with ornate gold-plated buttons and a clasp. Condition – As New. Commentary: 1 volume by Bernard Bousmanne and William Volkle – Language: German. The facsimile and commentary are housed in a clear acrylic slipcase/box (minor loss to the acrylic at one side of the slipcase edge). About the original manuscript. The Black Hours MS M. 493 today in the Pierpont Morgan Library New York was made around 1475 in Bruges, probably in the circle of Willem Vrelant, the leading illuminator of this time. The Black Hours is a product of unequalled luxury. All 121 vellum folios are stained in black. To make the writing stand out against the dark background, only white lead and opaque paints were used for the miniatures, and gold and silver ink for the script. Only three of these black parchment manuscripts bound in codices survive to this day. The 14 full-page miniatures are embellished with glittering gold to amplify the effect of the black stained pages. Finely differentiated shades of grey and a delicate noble coloring allowed the painter to enhance the perspective of interiors and landscapes before the black background. His limitation to a small number of carefully selected colors lends the miniatures their very special charm. The prayers are each introduced by a full-page picture. The Office of the Virgin alone contains eight of these miniatures, expressing the great veneration reserved for the Virgin Mary. When his father John the Fearless was stabbed to death on 10 September 1419 by servants of the French king, Philip was only 23 years old. Unable to revenge this murder, he decided to lend his mourning a visible expression. The mourners, who accompanied him during the celebrations and welcomed the French and the English kings on horseback, well befitted the splendor of the house of Burgundy. 2000 black pennants, with black standards and seven cubit long banners, their fringes in black silk, all embroidered or painted with golden coats of arms, adorned the funeral procession. Even the stately seats and coach of the duke were painted black. As Philip continued wearing black long after the mourning period was over, this began to “rub off” on the nobility and finally on the rich citizens of Flanders. From then on it was considered good form in Flanders to dress in black. This combination of religious thinking and fashionable splendor is the foundation of the Black Hours produced around 1475.
