The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night. Four volumes printed by The Folio Society in a limited run of 500 in 1973. Rendered into English from the literal and complete French translation of Dr J. Mardrus by Powys Mathers. Bound in full red goatskin leather with gilt tops, gilt titles and gilt decoration to spine and boards. The Folio Society issued this edition in a cloth variant as well in other years, however this full red goatskin leather binding was issued as a one-off run limited to 500, unnumbered sets. The books are all in near-fine condition. The gilt tops, as well as gilt lettering and decoration to spine and boards are close to intact. Joints and hinges are strong, with only the first volume appearing to have been opened (as it has a slight give as opposed to the other three volumes that have very tight bindings). Pages are clean and uninscribed. The slipcase has some shelf-wear, light scratches and a small inch-sized portion at the bottom (towards the rear), where it is slightly torn (photo 23), however nothing major or unsightly, and the slipcase is perfectly nice and structurally sound.
