SIGNED/Ltd 1050 Rudyard Kipling, Bombay (1913-27) 26 Volume Set inc Jungle Book
Published by Macmillan and Co. Volume 1 has been signed by Kipling on the half title. The set is one of a limited edition of just 1050 sets (un-numbered), though volume 26 states 1000, most likely a later addition to the set, printed by R & R Clark from the Florence Press Type, designed by Herbert P Horne and lent by Chatto and Windus, the Proprietors of the Type. Bound in the original quarter cloth with paper covered boards, paper title plates to the upper spines, with replacement spine labels bound to the rear of the volumes. The title pages are watermarked’RK’. Boards are generally in Vg condition as most of the volumes are still including their original jackets one with a replacement plain white paper jacket, and another retaining the covers, but not the spine strip. All other jackets remaining, but with losses and foxing. The volume with the replacement jacket has soiled boards (shown) but this does not affect the content. Internally the pages are clean and tight, but with some foxing and browning to the blanks. Block untrimmed to the fore and lower edges, top edge gilt. Volumes are as follows – 1 Plain Tales from the Hills; 2 Soldiers Three; 3 Wee Willie Winkie; 4 From Sea to Sea vol 1; 5 From Sea to Sea, vol 2; 6 Life’s Handicap; 7 The Light that Failed; 8 The Naulahka; 9 Many Inventions; 10 Captains Courageous; 11 The Jungle Book; 12 The Second Jungle Book; 13 The Day’s Work; 14 Stalky and Company; 15 Kim; 16 Just So Stories; 17 Traffics and Discoveries; 18 Puck of Pook’s Hill; 19 Rewards and Fairies; 20 Actions and Reactions; 21 Departmental Ditties; 22 Five Nations; 23 Songs from Books; 24 A Diversity of Creatures; 25 The Years Between; 26 Debits and Credits. A very weighty set at over 30kg when packed. An additional 5 volumes were subsequently published to bring the collection up to date. Very rare to find an original complete 25 volume set in the original binding. There was a hiatus after the publication of the 26th volume in 1927, and the remaining five volumes finally appeared in 1938, resulting in a number of extant sets terminating with the final volume present here. Fine (F): Should have no flaws, a perfect copy of a used book. Mint: Another term for Fine. Near Fine (NF): May show a small flaw, such as shelf wear, but nearly perfect and unread. Very Good (VG): The broadest category for used books, this describes any average used book. May have small flaws, and has probably been read, but should appear overall clean and attractive. Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is good ain’t good. Fair: Another term for Poor or Reading Copy : Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive. Binding Copy: This will be the complete pages of the book, but the binding has been broken or damaged to the point it will need professional rebinding. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
