A must have for any collector! History: The Kell’s Manuscript is one of the most renowned illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. Tentatively dated to the year 800 AD, the Book resided at the eponymous Abbey of Kells for many centuries before it was moved, in 1654. The text of the Book is largely taken from the Vulgate, a fourth century Latin translation of the Bible, though it includes several passages derived from the earlier Vetus Latina. It contains the four Gospels. The book was largely sacramental. It would have likely been displayed during Mass, rather than used for close examination. Insular art combined both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon visual elements to create a new hybrid style. Where its contemporary, the Byzantine style, sought to portray realistic three-dimensional forms, the Insular Style saw a flattening of human and animal forms. There was also a new focus on intricate patterning, heavily influenced by elite metalwork of the area. These formal elements can be clearly seen in the dense ornamentation on a majority of the folios in the The Kell’s Manuscript. Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks Series No. The Book of Distillation: the First Book. Edited with an Introduction and the woodcuts coloured by Adam McLean. Hieronymus Braunschweig’s famous. Liber de arte destillandi. Printed in 1500, was the earliest printed work on distillation and a very popular work. It was the fruit of many years work with distillations and he wanted to share this with the wider public. The book is divided into three parts : the first dealing with the apparatus needed and the various techniques used in distilling, the second part is a repertory of plants in alphabetical order, with a description of these, the methods of making distillations from them and the uses of these in medicine, while the third part builds on the second but instead presenting the information about the herbs, under the diseases to which they should be applied. Here I have transcribed the first part of the work and coloured the famous woodcuts. This book was extremely influential and helped establish the craft of distillation, which was the basis of the emerging chemical industry. One feels sure that many alchemists would have read this book of distillation. The simple woodcuts of apparatus were much copied in later books and this work had an impact on the practice of alchemy during the sixteenth century.
