Housed in original clamshell box and contains the original folio size book and a facsimile page of the Gutenberg Bible, twenty-third Psalm. Previously owned by Marylhurst University with their bookplate, and the bookplate of Charles F. Lawson, presented by Agnes Lawson. Book and print are in excellent condition, case has some general shelf wear, sun fading on front cover and a small handwritten call number on bottom of spine. Overall still in very good condition. BOOKS ARE MADE WITH REAL WOOD FOR THE INTERIOR OF THE FRONT AND BACK COVERS AS WELL AS THE SPINE. THE LEATHER IS A 4 OZ COWHIDE, FROM A SMALL SUPPLIER IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE LEATHER IS ADHERED TO THE COVERS WITH GLUE AND MOLDED INTO THE SHAPE AT THE HAND OF LOCAL ARTISANS. THE SIGNATURES/PAGES ARE HANDSEWN USING A LIBRARY BINDING METHOD. THE SEWN BOOK IS BOUND WITH A STRONG ADHESIVE GLUE THAT MAKES THE BINDINGS LAST, ESPECIALLY FOR THE LARGER BOOKS. WE ALSO ADD A THICK MULL CLOTH TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE BINDING, DRYING IN BETWEEN EACH LAYER, A TRADITIONAL WAY TO MAKE THE BINDING STIFF, STRONG, AND RESILIENT FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. THE DATE ON WHICH THE PRINTING WAS COMPLETED IS BASED SOLELY ON THE NOTATION “1455” ON THE BINDING OF THE PARIS PAPER COPY. IT IS BELIEVED THAT 180 COPIES OF THE BIBLE WERE PRINTED, BUT THIS INFORMATION IS BASED ON A SINGLE LETTER OF ENEA SILVIO PICCOLOMINI (THE FUTURE POPE PIUS II), WHO VIEWED SAMPLES OF GUTENBERG’S WORK, IN FRANKFURT IN 1455. GUTENBERG ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO PRINT THE HEADINGS OF THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE IN RED, BUT HE ABANDONED THIS APPROACH, USING INSTEAD A SEPARATELY PRINTED TABLE AS A PATTERN, FOR ENTERING THESE LINES BY HAND. OF THE 49 EXTANT, MORE-OR-LESS COMPLETE, COPIES OF THE GUTENBERG BIBLE (12 ON VELLUM, 37 ON PAPER), THIS COPY, FROM THE BAVARIAN STATE LIBRARY, IS ONE OF ONLY TWO (ALONG WITH ONE COPY IN THE AUSTRIAN NATIONAL LIBRARY) IN WHICH THIS TABLE IS FOUND, AS A VESTIGE OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS. JOHANN GUTENBERG WAS BORN IN MAINZ, GERMANY, AROUND 1400. HE WAS THE SON OF AN ARISTOCRATIC FAMILY, WITH TIES TO THE LOCAL METALWORKING INDUSTRY. HE LIVED IN STRASBOURG (IN PRESENT-DAY FRANCE) FOR A TIME, WHERE HE CARRIED OUT EXPERIMENTS WITH MOVABLE METALLIC TYPE, MADE FROM A MOLD. BY THE MID-1450’S HE HAD PERFECTED A SYSTEM OF PRINTING WITH MOVABLE TYPE. HE USED IT TO CREATE WHAT BECAME THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS BOOK, THE LATIN TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE (VULGATE), OTHERWISE KNOWN AS, THE GUTENBERG BIBLE. SCHOLARS HAVE THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED ALL ASPECTS OF GUTENBERG’S WORK, INCLUDING THE ELABORATE TYPEFACE, WITH ITS 290 DIFFERENT CHARACTERS DERIVED FROM A GOTHIC MISSAL SCRIPT. THE WAY HE DIVIDED THE TEXT IN THE TYPESETTING PROCESS, AND THE PAPER HE USED IN THE PRINTING HAVE ALSO BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL MATTERS ABOUT THE GUTENBERG BIBLE ARE STILL UNKNOWN, OR REMAIN MATTERS OF DISPUTE.

The language of the book is English and it is a genuine original, not a facsimile or reproduction. This book is a true treasure for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The Bible itself is in excellent condition. No damage, tears, stains or odors. There is no writing or recording of family history or personalizing. One page of the inside cover has had one corner that was carefully cut off(see photo provided), and has a message written to the original recipient below it (in beautiful penmanship by the way) congratulating them for their perfect attendance! Because of the writing on the inside cover the condition it is technically considered “used”; however, there are no other writing on any other pages and the penmanship is exceptionally striking and that makes it forgivable to me. The storage box, also red leather does show little wear and tear (see photo) and does indeed keep this collectible book protected. Isaac Leeser: Twenty Four Books Of The Holy Scriptures, Carefully Translated According To The Massoratic Text, After The Best Jewish Authorities And Supplied With Short Explanatory Notes. Built upon Leeser’s 1845 translation of the five books of the Torah, previous editions published by Jewish translators in England (such as Levi and Alexander) had simply utilised the King James translation. Leeser’s Preface explains that this massive undertaking sprung from’a desire entertained for more than a quarter of a century, since the day he quitted school in his native land to come to this country, to present to his fellow-Israelites an English version, made by one of themselves, of the Holy Word of God’. Readers would now’have an opportunity to study a version of the Bible which has not been made by the authority of churches in which they have no confidence’. The head rabbi of the Synagogue Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, he became America’s most influential Jewish writer, editor, and teacher. He promulgated Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States by providing American Jews with the numerous basic religious texts and conceptual tools they needed. This work marks a major milestone in scripture translation as it is the first complete translation of the Bible by a Jew. Indeed, in the early 19th century, most American Jews couldn’t read the Bible because they were not literate in Hebrew and an adequate English translation didn’t exist. Isaac Leeser’s “The Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures, ” first published in 1854, attempted to fill this need. Soon after its publication, this work became the standard for American Jews not conversant in Hebrew as well as an important contribution to Jewish American culture. Leeser spent 17 years on this landmark translation, relying almost exclusively on Jewish scholarship. Some age wear/scrapes of leather covers but can be sympathetically restored. Pages fully intact and still bound beautifully. Front cover worn away, back cover detached, but can be sympathetically repaired. Reach out for more info or photos.

[The Book of Saint Cyril]. [Moscow: Pechatni Dvor, 1644]. First edition of this Orthodox theological work, in a Russian binding. Known as’book of Saint Cyril’ from the author of the opening texts, it was a compendium, compiled by the religious polemicist Ivan Nasedka, of the true doctrines of the Eastern Orthodox Church according to Old Believers. In it, early Christian commentaries on the Apocalypse were used to interpret the life of the Catholic church, including its stance on most Protestant doctrines; it was accompanied by the fiery observations of the 16th-century Ruthenian theologian Stefan Zyzanii, considered heretical by the Muscovite religious authorities. It was especially renowned for its identification of the Pope with the anti-Christ, influenced by the rhetoric of Puritan millenarianism. The binding decoration is reminiscent of the panel stamps used at the bindery of the Trinity-St Sergius Monastery; it also bears small rectangular stamps for the title and a centrepiece with the lion and unicorn, reprising the seal of Tsar Ivan IV, typical of the Moscow printing house style. In Zernova, text in red and black, woodcut initials and ornaments (slight age browning, some finger-soiling or marginal spotting, occasional marginal tears with small loss, few old marginal repairs, edges softened, occasionally frayed, small ink burn affecting one letter, light water or oil stains in a few places). 17th-century brown calf, bevelled wooden boards, modern endpapers, two brass clasps, four small brass bosses to lower board, blind ruled to a panel design, upper board with rolls of tendrils and palmettes, two stamps with title and lozenge-shaped centrepiece with lion and unicorn, lower with floral rolls and round centrepiece with eagle eating a snake in blind, raised bands, spine blind tooled, a. E. R. (wanting centre brass boss, extremities rubbed, spine a bit cracked). Provenance: 17th-century partly indistinct inscription’Kniga Ivana?’ on two leaves – slightly later annotation.
