One of 2000 numbered copies (1000 of which were destroyed prior to publication, according to the artist) SIGNED by Hans Gissinger. Two volumes in a single slipcase, the first a collection of essays, the second a monograph of Gissinger’s extraordinary meditations on the creation of food, from the grotesque to the sublime. The binding and spine are detached in volume 1, need to be reglued. The pages are clean and unmarked. This item was kindly donated to raise funds for the Vision Foundation, London’s leading sight loss charity supporting the city’s best projects for blind and partially sighted people. The set consists of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 3 volumes slip-cased, 1950; The Later Adventures, 3 volumes slip-cased, 1952; The Final Adventures, 2 volumes slip-cased, 1952. Texts edited by Edgar W. Smith, introduction by Vincent Starett. Books designed by W. Dwiggins, illustrated with “A selective collation of the original illustrations by Frederic Doff Steele, Sidney Paget et al”. Sets were issued as #1427 of of 1500 copies. Octavo, paper-covered boards, cloth spines, glassine dust jackets. Books very good condition. Slip-cases mildly shelf-worn, rubbed edges, slight soiling. The glassine jackets are good to poor.
