This rare edition of. By Nathaniel Hawthorne is beautifully illustrated by the renowned British artist Arthur Rackham. Published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1922, this edition is a treasure for collectors of classic literature and illustrated books. The book is illustrated by Arthur Rackham, a key figure in early 20th-century book illustration. His works are highly regarded and sought after by collectors. Contains retellings of Greek myths by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a prominent American author, which broadens its appeal to both literature and art enthusiasts. Art Nouveau design elements on the cover and within the illustrations add a distinctive aesthetic value. Cover: The red cloth cover exhibits notable wear, particularly at the edges and corners. The gilt illustration on the front cover remains relatively intact, adding to the aesthetic appeal despite the wear. Spine (Bridge): The top of the spine shows significant fading, which is primarily cosmetic. The structural integrity of the spine is maintained, with no major tears or breaks observed. Binding: Generally tight, but with some expected loosening due to age. A couple of Rackham’s illustrations have become loose, though they remain present and in good condition. Pages: The internal pages are well-preserved with minimal foxing. The text remains clear and legible. The illustrations, aside from those mentioned as loose, are vivid and well-preserved. Preface: Includes the original preface dated July 15, 1851, which adds to the book’s historical significance. Nathaniel Hawthorne : An esteemed American novelist and short story writer, known for his dark romanticism and classic works such as “The Scarlet Letter” and The House of the Seven Gables. ” “A Wonder Book retells Greek myths for children, showcasing Hawthorne’s talent for engaging younger audiences with his storytelling prowess. Arthur Rackham : Celebrated for his detailed and imaginative illustrations, Rackham’s work in “A Wonder Book” adds significant value. All the tales are modified versions of ancient Greek myths. “The Gorgon’s Head” – recounts the story of Perseus killing Medusa at the request of the king of the island, Polydectes. “The Golden Touch” – recounts the story of King Midas and his “Golden Touch”. “The Paradise of Children” – recounts the story of Pandora opening the box filled with all of mankind’s Troubles. “The Three Golden Apples” – recounts the story of Heracles procuring the Three Golden Apples from the Hesperides’ orchard, with the help of Atlas. “The Miraculous Pitcher” – recounts the story of Baucis and Philemon providing food and shelter to two strangers who were Zeus and “Quicksilver” (Hermes) in disguise. Baucis and Philemon were rewarded by the gods for their kindness; they were promised never to live apart from one another. “The Chimæra” – recounts the story of Bellerophon taming Pegasus and killing the Chimæra.
