This rare, out-of-print hardcover is a signed and numbered (366 of 1000) first edition by renowned Subterranean Press. But none of the fans of this amazing work have ever known the full story of how The Last Unicorn came to be. In 1962, the 23 year-old Beagle was at a career crossroads. His fantasy novel A Fine and Private Place had been released to great critical acclaim in 1960, but his mainstream second book had been flatly rejected by his publisher. What Peter wrote next was an 80-page fragment about a unicorn, the last of her kind, lost in the modern world of superhighways and Kodak cameras, with only a banished demon from Hell for a traveling companion. This first take on the beloved classic — so much the same, so very different — is now available to readers for the first time, with an introduction and commentary by the author. Contained within this special edition are Beagle’s original 85-page unfinished start on the story plus a new introduction and afterword that set the fragment in context and discuss the differences between it and the complete novel published in 1968. These differences are extensive: the story takes place in the modern world, and aside from the unicorn and the butterfly, it contains none of the familiar characters from the novel. The unicorn’s traveling companion is a demon with two heads, one named Webster and the other Azazel. Condition: Near Fine (grading explanation at end of description). The book was taken care of very well, and little wear is seen anywhere. The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition, and the boards are square and tight. The pages are crisp and clean with no writing, creases, wrinkles, or dog ears. Photos are of book you will receive. International Buyers – Please Note. This is our highest grade. A book and/or dust jacket listed in this condition should be almost “like new” with only very minor signs of use, wear and/or rubbing. Any flaws are usually described in the book’s listing. A fine copy, particularly if it is of a rare book or rare in that condition, will usually carry a substantial premium in price. A book and/or dust jacket in near fine condition cannot be classified as fine because it has a greater accumulation of minor flaws and signs of use than a fine copy. It’s flaws are usually described in the book’s listing. A near fine copy is still an extremely presentable and collectible copy, just not as close to “like new” as a fine copy. A book and/or dust jacket in very good condition will still be very presentable and in generally sound condition, but it will have visible flaws, including minor fading or staining to covers, rubbing of the extremities, chipping at the spine ends, fraying of cloth, and/or soiling and foxing. A plus (+) or minus (-) sign may be added to a very good designation in order to account for the wide range of condition this classification presides over. A book in good condition will show considerably more wear than grades which precede it and is usually not preferred by collectors unless it is highly rare or of considerable historical significance.
