Book of Lost Tales V. 1&2, Unfinshed Tales J. R. R, Tolkien (2003 Leather Easton)
The Book of Lost Tales, Parts 1 & 2, Unfinshed Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth – J. R. R, Tolkien (2003 Leather Easton). The Book of Lost Tales was the first major work of imagination by J. Tolkien, begun in 1916, when he was twenty-five years old, and left incomplete several years later. It stands at the beginning of the entire conception of Middle-earth and Valinor that came to be called The Silmarillion. Embedded in English legend and English association, they were set in the narrative frame of a great westward voyage over the Ocean by a mariner named Eriol (or Ælfwine) to Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, where Elves dwelt; from them he learned their true story, the Lost Tales of Elfinesse. In the Tales are found the earliest accounts and original ideas of Gods and Elves; Dwarves and Orcs; the Silmarils and the Two Trees of Valinor; Nargothrond and Gondolin; and the geography and cosmology of the invented world. The Book of Lost Tales is published in two volumes. The first contains the Tales of Valinor; and the second past includes Beren and Luthien, Turin and the Dragon, and the only full narratives of the Necklace of the Dwarves and the Fall of Gondolin. Each tale is followed by a commentary, together with associated poems, and each volume contains extensive information on names and vocabulary of the earliest Elvish languages. Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read The Lord of the Rings with a whole collection of background and new stories from the twentieth century’s most acclaimed popular author. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as Gandalf’s lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. Unfinished Tales also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the PalantÍri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were collated and edited by J. Tolkien’s son and literary heir, Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father’s writings. These three volumes are presented here in classic Easton Press style, leather bound , gilt edged , finely illustrated and printed on acid-neutral paper with ribbon markers. It doesn’t get much better than this! And see my other Easton Press titles here. International buyers may pay extra. The item “Book of Lost Tales V. 1&2, Unfinshed Tales J. R. Trident Books & Ars Obscura [1996], Seattle, WA, 1996. Xvi+ 120pp, b&w illustrations. Magnificent full black leather binding with raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, title in gilt on spine and upper board, ribbon markers. The First Trident Books edition, in the original state (not a later re-issue). The text of the Grand Grimoire, translated from the 1612 Italian edition, with reference to the 1823 French edition (published with the spurious date 1521 and with the title’The Red Dragon’). In keeping with the Italian edition, it incorporated an early, short version of the Grimoire known as Le Poule Noire (The Black Hen). The publisher observes: The Grand Grimoire explains a system for entering into a pact with three Infernal Spirits, Lucifer, Ashtaroth & Beelzebuth, through the authority of the Prime Minister of Hell, Lucifuge Rofocale. In this, the demonology of the Grand Grimoire is unique; while some of the chief spirits are identical to those in Grimoirium Verum, and others to Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis vel Regis, the Grand Grimoire stands alone in the literature of demonology with its central figure, Lucifuge Rofocale. The name’Rofocale’ appears to be an anagram for’Focalor’ of the Lemegeton, according to Elizabeth Butler in her Ritual Magic (1949) who goes on to tell us that by introducing the name of Lucifuge the author has done a service to demonology for which it should be grateful. In his Book of Black Magic & of Pacts (1898), Arthur E. Waite states that the Grand Grimoire “must be regarded as the veritable Magnum Opus” and he goes on to say that that Eliphas Levi later adopted the personage of Lucifuge in his works. Some very slight, natural imperfections to leather but still a lovely Fine copy. Scarce in this binding. Tales from the Crypt The Official Archives Hardcover Rare Leather HC Ltd to 50
Tales from the Crypt The Official Archives (Priciest Edition) Limited to 50 Leather Hardcover. Real Life straight-from-the-corpse-to-you beige leather edition. Designed by David Kaestle & Rick DeMonico. National Public Radio commentator Diehl recounts the history of Tales from the Crypt, which has scared horror fans through comics, television, and movies for 40 years. Tales from the Crypt Official Archives limited edition hardcover centers on four special sections, each of which is worth the price of the whole book: there are biographies of 13 artists from the E. Stable; glossy, full-color covers for all 105 E. Horror comics; 4 beautifully reproduced, complete tales in their original form (on creamy white paper stock); and a never-before-seen “Picto-Fiction” story from E. S heyday, illustrated by Jack Davis. All of this and more has been lovingly put together by literary correspondent and columnist, Digby Diehl. Tales From The Crypt: The Official Archives by Digby Diehl as published by St. Martin’s Press and Hamilton Comics Ltd, 1996. This is one of the limited signed genuine leather hardcover editions published by Bruce Hamilton’s Hamilton Comics Ltd, with a signed bookplate inside the front cover. Real Life straight-from-the-corpse-to-you leather. Beige edition is signed by seven of the original EC Comics artists and writers. It also includes a hand-inked art signature, with the famous “little man” autograph of the now-deceased genius behind MAD and one of the principal early artists for Tales from the Crypt, Harvey Kurtzman. It also includes a frameable 8′ x 10 glossy photo of the television Crypt Keeper, individually autograped in gold by the old ghoul himself. Finally, this awesome limited edition also includes a statement of authenticity hand signed by Bruce Hamilton himself stating that this copy / edition is limited to 50 and bound in genuine leather. A real EC treasure!! Martin’s Press published the hardcover trade editions and softcover editions, Bruce Hamilton had the rights to publish the limited edition versions. With the interior pages and contents being exactly the same, Hamilton Comics published four different; Pricey Editions, each one limited and with different colored covers. Each of the four colored editions had EC ghoulish-names attached to them. The red cover version was called Stripped Flesh mottled red. The green cover version was called Swamp water Slime mottled green. The Brown cover version was called Rotting Corpse mottled brown. The off white cover version was called Bleached Bones. Each of the 500 copies (the copies were not individually numbered) was bound in gold foil stamped, glossy Skivertex (which is much more durable than the trade editions chipboard and paper binding) and printed in full color on off white slick paper. Each of Pricey Edition, “colored”, limited editions contains a special. Bookplate inside the front cover. The bookplate is Hand-Signed by seven of the original EC Comics artists and writers; Jack Davis, Joe Orlando, Johnny Craig, Al Feldstein, Al Williamson, Marie Severin, and George Evans. This “Priciest Edition” was limited to only 50 beige genuine leather copies world-wide. Although, the “Priciest Edition” was originally advertised as being a numbered out of 50 book, they were never actually numbered (for reasons unknown) nor did they include an original certificate of authenticity. Included is all the correspondence between Green Apple Books and Bruce Hamilton and the statement of authenticity (which other copies DO NOT include). This book is not strictly about the television show, as a matter of fact, it’s 75-80% about the history of EC Comics, the trials and tribulations of Bill Gaines and the US Senate hearings, the fan publications and reprints that lead to EC Comic’s resurgence, and finally how all this lead to Hollywood and the TV series and several motion pictures. The official biography of the Crypt Keeper and the history of EC Horror Comics. A previously unpublished picto-fiction horror story drawn by Jack Davis. All 105 EC Horror Comic covers reproduced in full-color. A pictorial “filmography” of the award-winning HBO and Fox Television series featuring credits, synopses, and episode guide. Four original (and complete) stories by Jack Davis, Al Feldstein, Graham Ingels, and Jack Kamen reprinted from the actual art and reproduced in color in their original size. Brief biographies and portfolios of the key EC artists. Collectible section highlighting the coolest and most valuable Crypt merchandise. Bound in “real life”, straight-from-the-corpse-to-you genuine beige leather. Limited to 50 World-Wide. A hand-inked art signature, with the famous “little man” autograph of the now-deceased genius behind MAD and one of the principal early artists for Tales from the Crypt, Harvey Kurtzman. A frameable 8′ x 10 glossy photo of the television Crypt Keeper, individually autograped in gold by the old ghoul himself.
