Or The Flowers of Evil, is an entire volume of poetry by the eminent French author Charles Baudelaire. It was first published in 1857 and a pioneering and important work in both the symbolist and modernist movements. Thematically this poem deals with decadence and eroticism. It is segregated thematically into six sections. Through this work Baudelaire conveys his ideas of the changing nature of beauty in a modern, industrialising, society. This particular work of Baudelaires has great significance due to its initial reception. Originally both the author and publisher were prosecuted as this work was viewed as an insult to public decency. Baudelaire was fined 300 francs from this prosecution. Charles Baudelaire was an eminent French poet of the nineteenth century. Most notably, Baudelaire is credited with coining the term’modernity’ to designate the ephemeral, yet fleeting experience of life in an urban metropolis. It contains all six of the censored poems – Les Bijoux, Le Lethe, A Celle Quie Est Trop Gaie, Lesbos, Femmes Damnees, and Les Metamorphoses Du Vampire (pages 247- 264). Inscription from previous owner on inside front cover 1936 in ink, and small pencil writing on last blank page – no other markings or writing. Good vintage condition with all pages intact.
