This rare book, the First Edition 1897 Irene Iddesleigh by Amanda M’Kittrick Ros, is a valuable collector’s item for those interested in literature from the late 19th century. Published by W&G Baird Ltd Dublin, this hardcover book is a unique piece with the added value of being signed by the author in 1899 and presented to: H. Solicitor, Larne – with compliments from the author, 1899. Who Sir Hugh Holmes Smiley (1858 – 1909) was: – 2nd Baronet of Drumalis, a highly respected solicitor, Justice of the Peace, and figure of note in late-Victorian / Edwardian Ulster society in Ireland. Drumalis House, near Larne, was known locally as a centre of social and cultural life. His position would have made him exactly the sort of recipient Amanda McKittrick Ros would have sought to impress with a complimentary copy of her self-published novel. She was famously ambitious and would present books to titled or professional acquaintances around County Antrim to raise her profile. This book therefore, is a first edition presentation copy inscribed by the author to a titled Baronet and local dignitary – a very rare and culturally resonant provenance. With its intriguing title and historical significance, this book would make a prized addition to any book collection. Wear to spine and pages are yellowed/showing foxing. Pages are also becoming loose. Please do review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.
