According to one version of a legend already recorded in the Middle Ages, the scribe was a monk who broke his monastic vows and was sentenced to be walled up alive. To escape death, he. Promised to create, in one night, a book to glorify the monastery forever, including all human knowledge. The Devil completed the manuscript, and the monk added the Devil’s picture as a tribute. National Library of Sweeden. Uxurious black leatherbound- gold foil lettering. It is unclear exactly how the medieval manuscript came about. But we know that it was written in the Kingdom of Bohemia – now the western part of Czechia – sometime between 1204 and 1230. Among other things, the manuscript contains a complete Bible, historical texts, magic formulas and spells. With the Devil’s help? A legend concerning the origin of the Codex Gigas relates that a lone scribe wrote the entire work over the course of a single night. When the scribe realised that the task was beyond his powers, he asked the Devil for help. The legend has absolutely no basis in reality. However, it does testify to the fact that the size of the Devil’s Bible made such an impression that people accounted for its origins with reference to the supernatural. Jerusalem and the Devil. The two full-page pictures on a spread towards the end of the book show Heavenly Jerusalem and the portrait of the Devil. The positioning of the pictures highlights the difference between the symbol of hope and salvation on the one hand, and that of darkness and evil on the other. Author portrait, heaven and earth. The three marginal pictures are found in Antiquities of the Jews, written by Josephus Flavius. The first is a portrait of the author placed next to the prologue of the work. The others consist of two orbs found right at the beginning. These pictures represent heaven and earth and illustrate the beginning of the Creation story. These are the only pictures found throughout the Codex Gigas with a link to the text. History of the Codex Gigas. This is the 1993 single-volume edition of the Codex Seraphinianus, printed on handmade paper, in slipcase, limited to 5000 copies and individually numbered. It is the first edition with a specially commissioned Introduction by Italo Calvino. The Codex Seraphinianus was originally issued in Europe in two volumes in 1981, followed the next year with a one volume edition in the USA. The publisher then issued a new single volume edition this one solely in Spain and France in 1993, with the new material by Calvino. The copy on offer here is the Spanish edition; while Calvinos brief Introduction is in Spanish, the book itself is in the imaginary language Serafini created so it reads the same as the UK and American editions. All of these 1993 editions have a limitation page with a facsimile signature by the publisher, Franco Ricci — see photo. Unfortunately, some online sellers are claiming that these copies are signed, as if the signature was original and by the author, Luigi Serafini. The only author-signed version was the 1981 two-volume edition, now rare, and a 2013 commemorative edition issued in 300 copies, perhaps even scarcer. This copy is in excellent condition, while the slipcase is in VG+ condition it is slightly dusty and the left end of the top panel of the slipcase is raised a bit higher than the right end. The item “Luigi Serafini, CODEX SERAPHINIANUS, Ltd, Numbered, First Edition with Calvino” is in sale since Saturday, October 16, 2021.
