Penitential prayer book Limited Edition Facsimile, Fine Binding
Penitential prayer book by Albrecht Glockendon for Johann II von Pfalz-Simmern – Limited Edition Facsimile, Fine Binding. Published 2010 by Faksimile Verlag – Lucerne, in a limited edition of 980 (this copy is number 640). Facsimile reproduction of the entire original document that is as accurate as possible (size, format, color). 52 pages / 13.8 × 9.9 cm. As with many medieval manuscripts, the original binding has not been preserved. Probably in the 18th century, the work was bound in dark brown leather, which was imitated for the facsimile edition. Gold embossing was applied to the front and back. The book block has a gold edge on three sides. A hand-stitched headband adorns the head and foot section of the book. Commentary volume by Ulrich Merkl (Language: German). Together presented in a beautiful leather case made of brown cowhide, with a window. The penitential prayer book by Albrecht Glockendon for Johann II von Pfalz-Simmern is a special gem from the genre of hourly or devotional book. It arose in the transitional period between the Middle Ages and modern times, and is one of the last highlights of book illumination before the triumph of printing. The text focuses primarily on the biblical story of David and Bathsheba, chronicling the events from the fall of the Israelite king to his redemption through repentance. It is adorned with 9 large miniatures, some taking up a whole page, and 19 ornate initials. The Old Testament story is brought into the Renaissance by depicting the figures in 16th-century fashion and architectural settings. The illuminator Albrecht Glockendon was one of two famous sons of the progenitor of the Glockendon dynasty, Georg Glockendon the Elder. Albrecht was an experienced and talented illuminator who very consciously created his own unmistakable style, presumably to set himself apart from his brother Nikolaus. In a courageous act, he dispensed with the realistic effects that were customary at the time, deliberately opting for the opposite, namely reduction and abstraction, supported by extraordinary colour effects. Nevertheless, he commissioned one of the last truly masterful illuminated manuscripts as a gift for his youngest son, which was created around 1532/33.

THE ROYAL PRAYER BOOK FOR OTTO III Limited Edition Facsimile
THE ROYAL PRAYER BOOK FOR OTTO III – Limited Edition Facsimile. Published by Faksimile Verlag, Luzern, 2008. Full-size colour reproduction of the entire original document (Clm 30111, Bavarian State Library, Munich), the facsimile attempts to replicate the look-and-feel and physical features of the original, pages are trimmed according to the original format. As the original binding has been lost, the facsimile volume was modelled on a Byzantine silken binding that imitates the binding of the Ottonian Abba Codex. Both the facsimile and the commentary volume are presented in a noble leather case with a bas relief inset replica of two Byzantine ivory plates from the Aachen Cathedral Treasury. The two decorative plates were first part of a foldable altarpiece and were later integrated in a book cover. The scholarly commentary to the facsimile (in German with English summaries) is by Hermann Hauke and Elisabeth Klemm and provides a description and interpretation of the manuscript. Limited edition of 980 copies (this copy being number 754). 88 pages, 5 full-page miniatures with gold leaf and 25 multi-line gold initials as well as numerous small initials. Each page written in gold on a purple background. Facsimile size – 150 x 120 mm. About the original Manuscript. Today kept in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek of Munich, the Royal Prayer Book for Otto III is a historic and cultural monument of the highest order: a private prayer book made for a king of the early Middle Ages and an extremely rare and precious item. This gem was produced with the luxury worthy of a king, as a codex aureus: its 44 leaves in the format 15 x 12 cm are made of the finest vellum and entirely written in gold on purple ground. Precious gold was also used for the 25 golden initials that extend over several lines and for the countless small initials at the beginning of each sentence. The five full-page miniatures made by the artist of the royal prayer book are an impressive feature. These gold-framed images provide a deep insight into the Ottonian emperors’ concept of rulership. The recipient of the manuscript is depicted in no less than three of them. The images were created with the intention of making the young ruler – Otto was less than twelve years old when the book was given to him – familiar with the high ideals of his rulership in reference to Christ. The Royal Prayer Book for Otto III was made in the years between the crowning of the three-year-old Otto in 983 and the death of his mother, the Byzantine princess Theophanu, in 991. Its character as a kind of princely mirror suggests that it was either made on the behest of Theophanu who ordered the manuscript for her son, or on that of Archbishop Willigis of Mainz, her loyal adviser. Thus it must have been either Theophanu or Willigis who selected the texts to show Otto which behaviors were expected from a Christian king. At eleven years of age, Otto advanced to the throne himself. During a campaign in Italy, he enthroned his cousin Brun as Pope Gregory V who then crowned him emperor in 997 in Rome.

Waldburg Prayer Book, Limited edition facsimile
Waldburg Prayer Book, Facsimile Edition published 1986 by Deuschle & Stemmle – Darmstadt, in a limited edition of 600 (this is copy number 23) in an embossed leather cover. 122 pages / 17.5 × 13.2 cm. The Waldburg Prayer Book is one of the few richly decorated prayer books in German and was created in 1476 for the Swabian nobleman George II of Waldburg (1430-82) and his wife, Countess Anna of Kirchberg ca. Little is known about the origin of this manuscript, and its ownership history can only be traced back to around 1800. The only certainties are the manuscript’s patron, George II of Waldburg (1430-82), and the year of its completion, 1476. It is not known how the manuscript came to be in Stuttgart or Ludwigsburg, where Duke Charles Eugene of Württemberg founded the Ducal Library in 1765. Thus, the entire period from 1476 to the late 18th century remains a mystery. The manuscript’s original binding was replaced sometime in the first half of the 19th century by the present binding, whose simple appearance betrays the value and significance of its contents: a masterfully illuminated, uniquely designed German prayer book from the early days of the Northern Renaissance. In addition to depictions of religious figures and symbols, including the Arma Christi, George II of Waldburg is depicted several times, usually kneeling before a saint. Once, however, he also appears as his namesake: Saint George slaying a dragon. A total of 46 mostly full-page miniatures, seven historiated initials, and dozens of three- and four-line initials in bright colors and gold. Unlike most prayer books, this manuscript does not have a calendar at the beginning of the codex, but the Litany of All Saints, which begins on fol. 64r, has an internal structure consisting of chronological blocks arranged according to the church year, which is absolutely unique for a litany. There is further evidence for the manuscript’s geographical provenance: among the no fewer than 178 saints listed in the manuscript, divided into apostles, martyrs, confessors, and women, is Saint Magnus of Füssen, the so-called Apostle of the Allgäu. He was greatly venerated in the area around Waldsee, where George II resided, which indicates the Allgäu in Upper Swabia. This is also evidenced by the fact that Magnus was the patron saint of the nearby Premonstratensian monastery of Schussenried. Other local saints include Bishop Gebhard of Constance, Bishop Narcissus of Augsburg, the hermit Saint Meinrad, and the rarely mentioned Ulrich of Zell. The work must therefore have been created in an area where the old dioceses of Constance and Augsburg overlap. A possible place of production would therefore be a studio or a court artist in the town of Kempten, the oldest urban settlement in Germany.
