A GIRL CALLED GEORGINA. OVER THE SEX BORDER. Published in 1992 by The Book Guild Ltd. Signed and inscribed by the author. Genuinely scarce – at the time of listing, no other copies of this edition, let alone signed, are currently available online. Born in 1923 and registered as George Edwin Turtle, she trained as a dentist, served as a Royal Navy Surgeon Lieutenant during World War 2, and lived the first 34 years of her life publicly as a man. In 1960 her birth certificate was legally amended, and in 1962 she married in church under English law – a remarkable event at the time. Her original 1963 study, Over the Sex Border, was one of the earliest British works to examine intersexuality and “sex change” from lived experience alongside medical analysis – decades before contemporary terminology or frameworks existed. In 1966 Georgina appeared on the BBC’s Horizon programme, Sex Change, helping to bring what was then a largely unspoken subject into serious public discussion. With today’s often heated debates, Over the Sex Border stands as an early and thoughtful primary source – rooted in lived experience rather than ideology. This volume combines her illustrated autobiography with a full reprint of that groundbreaking study, making it both. Historically important and deeply personal. The book was inscribed in October 1993 to “Dr John Stevens”. A consultant psychiatrist of this name was active in the UK in the field of gender dysphoria and a member of the Gender Recognition Panel during this period. I’ve listed some other books which may be of interest.
