Cloth somewhat marked and worn on both volumes and with partial split along spine on front board of each volume. Probably a relatively simple repair for the skilled amateur or perhaps your local professional book restorer. Spine quite faded on each volume. The odd grubby mark and some sporadic foxing internally but still a good two volume set. Becoming harder to find in the original cloth binding. Edition limited to 450 sets, this being number 167. Folio (320 x 410mm). Ppxvi, 142, xii, 164. Full-page plates volume one – 32 plates, of which 22 are coloured, volume two – 42 plates, of which 17 are coloured. Original dark red cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Edition limited to 450 individually numbered copies. Pictures show the actual copy being offered for sale. Any questions please ask. A spectacular large format two volume set with full-page coloured and black-and-white illustrations by Archibald Thorburn, O. Gronvold and, of course, J. Millais himself along with several photogravure plates. This, the first and only edition, was limited to just 450 individually numbered sets, this being set number 167. Certainly one of the most attractive of all of the illustrated bird books with illustrations by some of the finest wildlife artists of the period. Scarce and highly sought-after.
