This is a true first limited edition of Stirrings Still by Samuel Beckett with illustrations by Louis le Brocquy. It was designed by Peter Wildbur for Barney Rosset and John Calder in 1988. The illustrations consist of one original two-toned lithographic image of Samuel Beckett and eight original lithographic drawings in black ink. The text was set in England by Apex Typesetting Limited in Monotype Garamond 156 and the book is was printed by lithography by Pierte Chave at his Atelier in Vence, France for’Etablissements DermonDucal’. The paper is deckle edged Velin de Rives made by Arjomari, France. The book is quarter bound in parchment with a natural linen and cotton cloth, stamped with a motif by the artist in eighteen carat gold and supplied in a matching slipcase. The entite edition consists of two hundred and twenty-six copies, numbered 1 to 200 for general sale and lettered a to z hors-commerce. Each copy has been numbered by hand and signed by the author and artist. Please make reference to the listing images for a full visual description. Overall the book is in fine condition and would make a great addition to any Samuel Beckett or Irish collection. It portrays, in Beckett’s spare style, a “consciousness” exploring a “self, ” faced with uncertainties about its own existence.
