1977, Corpus Christi, TX. Limited Edition Book w/ SIGNED Original Color Photograph. Photographs by Jeremy Kost. By ICP, NY, 2009. On colophon with one original 4″ x 4″ digital C-Print (SIGNED by artist in pencil on verso) tipped in to last page (first image shown). Dimensions: 9″ x 6-1/2″. This is Jeremy Kost’s first book and he has chosen as his subject Max and the Tiger. The unguarded intimacy that characterizes Jeremy’s work is portrayed in this series of 62 images taking the viewer on a voyeuristic romp packed with erotic wallop. Jeremy chooses to work with a Polaroid camera, this obsolescent device is less furtive than the digital cameras of more recent vintage, and seems to disarm people with its promise of an immediately tangible picture. Kost enjoys working within the Polaroid’s technical restrictions which limits his control and results in the images marred by uneven luminosity and fuzzy contours. The book is limited to 150 numbered copies and each includes a signed original digital c-print (pictured). Nature i s a limited edition book published by the International Center of Photography, New York in conjunction with the exhibition ” Dress Codes, International Center of Photography Triennial of Photography and Video “, 10/1/2009 – 1/17/2010. The book features reproductions of polaroids of the actor/director/model Max Emerson showering with a stuffed tiger ending with an original, signed tipped-in inkjet print signed by Jeremy. The is the artist’s first book, published two years before his monograph, ” It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn ” in 2011. Jeremy Kost is known on the New York circuit as ” the Polaroid artist “. While the digital wave continues to gather force in contemporary art, Kost creates art with his tried and true Polaroid cameras. Because famous persons, including Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan, embrace his creative methods, Kost has direct access to their relaxed environments. The artist exposes the reality of celebrities and the fashion and art elite in compelling, unstaged Polaroid photographs. Influenced by Andy Warhol, he also finds inspiration in underground scenes of the East Village and the Lower East Side. The artist responds spontaneously and directly to whatever this eclectic, gritty world presents him. Instead of relying on lighting, make-up, or styling, he seizes upon the integrity of the moment. Whether his shots convey the energy of a hedonistic smile, or the honest look of true exhaustion, Kost’s art reveals the character of his subjects with uncompromising immediacy.
