The subject of canal zander is a highly complex and controversial one which has caused heated debate, hatred and adoration of this fascinating and highly adaptable predatory fish. The pike/perch or zander of old was a pariah that lured many anglers, hunters and naturalists alike; now it has a fanatical, almost cult-like following amongst its admirers and a total loathing from those who seek its extermination. In this book John Glover takes the reader through the history of England’s most controversial coarse fish, a journey filled with the stories, characters, the dark nights, frosty dawns and the breath-taking excitement that the species generates. This is a story of love and hate, nature and control and is the next best thing to actually being out on the bank pursuing England’s so-called devil fish on the Midland’s waterways. For all those who have always wanted to catch a zander, this is the book for you. The author discusses many subjects including rods, lines, lures, live and dead baits, water conditions, weather conditions, locations and habits. Full of photographs from the author’s personal library this is the ultimate’how to catch them’ book and deserves a place on every predator angler’s bookshelf. Contents include:- Preface; Introduction; The new Fens; Established; The ideal environment; The witch hunt; Electro-culling; Blame it on the zander; The venues; The methods; Live baits; Dead baits; Lures; The most sought after predator.
