A scarce limited-edition, 1 of only 100 copies, of this reproduction facsimile of the masterpiece from English poet, painter and printmaker William Blake (1757 – 1827). His engravings of’ The Book of Job’ was a long-term project, finally published in 1826, just a year before his death. Illustrations of the Book of Job : Invented and Engraved by William Blake’, published Methuen in London in 1903, badged as a New Edition but 1st edition thus in this format, 8vo, quarter bound in white cloth with steel blue paper covered boards, aside from the prelims and title page, the remainder of the book comprises the 22 single-sided monochrome engravings. Methuen also published a standard trade edition of this work in the same year. Externally in at least good+ condition, publisher’s original quarter white cloth with cream paper title and author lettering label to the spine, steel blue paper covered boards. Spine label slightly rubbed, spine cloth faded. Corners are rounded and worn, light edgewear, assorted marks to paper boards. Internally in at least good+ condition, no ownership inscriptions, rear hinge solid but cracking to front hinge (still secure). The 22 monochrome etchings are on India paper mounted on handmade paper, each stating’Proof’ to the bottom right hand corner, and are in a reduced facsimile format from the original 1826 edition released by Blake. All are tissue-guarded (1 loose), the paper mounting of each has toning and spotting but all of the engravings, save for a very odd spot, are unaffected by this. A scarce and important limited-edition of William Blake’s masterpiece work, which was, unusually, a commercial success in his lifetime.
