A special signed slipcased limited edition (1 of only 100 in this format) from a raft of award-winning travel writers, issued to raise funds for Oxfam. Star names from this genre to have signed next to their contributions for this book include Jan Morris, Colin Thubron and Paul Theroux, as well as Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka, who won the 2022 Booker Prize. Most of the writers within are from the UK, but global names feature (the latter 2 gentleman as above), as well as Sonia Faleiro (India), Dervla Murphy and Jasper Winn (Ireland), Lloyd Jones (NZ), Raja Shehadeh (Palestine), Janine di Giovanni (US) and Peter Godwin (Zimbabwe). Meetings of Remarkable Travel Writers’ published by Profile Books in London in 2011, 1st edition, medium modern hardback, 432 pages. Introduced by Michael Palin. Edited by Mark Ellingham, Peter Florence and Barnaby Rogerson (non-signatories). B&w photos/portraits accompany each author’s contribution. Signed by 35 of the contributing authors on colour-printed’bookplate stamps’ designed by artist Sroop Sunar, tipped in before their contribution (Patrick Leigh Fermor died during the production of the book — in place of his signature are the dates’11/2/1915 – 10/6/2011′). This is one of the 100 copies of this limited edition (those numbered 1-100), from the overall limited edition of 250 copies, that have this signed’bookplate stamps’ treatment. This copy is number 31. Since production, a further 5 of the authors (at the time of listing) have sadly passed away – Michael Jacobs (2014), Sarah Maguire (2017), John Julius Norwich (2018), Jan Morris (2020) and Dervla Murphy (2022). In very fine unread condition. The book is bound in dark-blue cloth by MPG Biddles, the upper board with impressed panel lettered in white, spine lettered in white; pictorial endpapers featuring Sroop Sunar’s’stamps’, housed in a clear plastic sleeve, red cloth slipcase, yellow ribbon page marker. A very uncommon item. A large number of important travel writers feature here as signatories of this book at their contributions, several of whom have since passed away.
