A first edition, first impression biography of the British mathematician, codebreaker, and early computer scientist, Alan Turing, written by Andrew Hodges. The book covers Alan Turing’s life and work. Many of us may be familiar with the 2014 film The Imitation Game, which is loosely based on the book, with dramatization. Publisher’s original binding with some bumping to corners, as well as head and tail of spine. Boards and spine clean, with gilt title to spine ever-so-lightly rubbed. Tanning to edges and prelims with few, if any, signs of foxing. Pages tightly bound with none loose. Ex-library copy, therefore it comes with stamp to bottom edge (National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex), ex-libris bookplate to front paste-down end paper, and stamp, date and inscription to FFEP. Otherwise an immaculate example within. Slight discolouration to spine and minimal creasing to extremities. Overall, with the exception of the ex-libris marks, a VG+ to near-fine example. Rare White’s Books Fine Edition Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte (2008, 1st/1st)
An incredibly rare find. This book appears unread, but does have some minor wear and tear to spine and rubbing to extremities. The hardback exterior also seems to be slightly faded, most motably to the spine — this is very common for these, as no dust covers were included. This is White’s Books’ 2008 very limited 1st pressing of a small run of classics. I would say the overall condition is excellent, most probably unread, but has been handled and suffered wear and tear from 15+ year shelf life. This particular title suffers discolouration to spine and hardback exterior and is a common issue because of pigmentation/lack of dust jacket (was never included in any of the set). A small print run collection of classic literature – very popular with collectors and increasingly difficult to find now. Each book is bound in cloth and features unique wraparound artwork by different contemporary artists – working under the brief of designing a non-repeating narrative pattern. The books are largish hardbacks with Smyth-sewn pages; they use thick, acid-free paper and the top edges are colour-stained; and they include a bound-in ribbon bookmark. Internally, the books have illustrated endpapers (an inverted version of the cover design) and a decorative title page, and the text is elegantly typeset in Monotype Haarlemmer, and right-facing pages are joined to the overleaf by a catchword: an older practice wherein a hanging word at the bottom of the page provides the opening of the following page (intended to assist with reading flow). The books were issued with an obi-wrap (or belly band) detailing the benefits of the editions. Best of luck with any offers &####128077.
