A Life in Four Books signed, not once but five! First edition thus; first edition of the work in four books, one of a limited edition of 2000 copies each signed and numbered by Gary to the slipcase top edge. This set unusually also signed to each volume with Gray’s customarily odd wit. Publisher’s burgundy and blue cloth elaborately decorated in gilt to the boards and backstrips, each with dust jackets. Housed in the publisher’s slipcase. The volumes variably signed;’Alistair to Anita’ to first three volumes, and’Alasdair to Gray’ to fourth volume. The set is number 1565/2000. The books fine, the dust jackets all fine but for small closed tear to the first volume top edge and some mild crimping to others. The slipcase structurally sound, the signed element somewhat faded as is often the case, but a unique example of the limited edition. Gray’s magnum opus-despite the more recent celebrations of his Poor Things (1992)-whose publication lifted the artist-author to the preeminent modern Scottish novelist. Originally published in 1981, this is in a sense the third hardcover printing; Gray, ever the obsessive controller over his own books, insisted the second printing be endowed with elaborate gilt boards he became famous for. Canongate refused, and a resolution came in the 1985 limited edition each signed by the author. This, published on the twentieth anniversary of the first edition, again flexes tradition, assembling this sprawling novel subtitled’a life in four books’ into literally just that. Highly recommended by this cataloguer.

Numbered – 45/250 (does not include number rights). From Sunup’s description. The Numbered edition of 250 copies is a quarter goatskin binding with a custom pattern design by Laura Serra printed on linen cloth covering the boards and a foil blocked leather label. The spine is Pentland Goatskin from J. Endsheets are Hahnemühle Bugra and the head & tail bands are handmade with leather. The book is housed in a cloth covered clamshell enclosure with velour lined floors and a foil blocked leather spine label. A fold-out of the Classic edition endsheet & dust jacket illustration is included. The edition is printed letterpress on Mohawk Superfine and is signed by the author and artist. All items kept in a smoke-free home.

Near fine/very good/very good. Bit of age toning to front pastedown (only); jacket faintly edgeworn, more so to spine, which is age toned; Slipcase a bit edgeworn bvut strong. Tight, lovely copy of this early LEC production — fourth title in their 8th series. The 16th century Italian artist/goldsmith/sculptor’s memoir (completed in 1563 but not published until a couple hundred years later) remains a classic of Renaissance life, wildly entertaining and filled with braggadocia beyond belief. Printed in two-column format, with Kredel’s ink-and-wash illustrations as usual a delight. Colophon at rear notes limitation of 1550 copies (this #1132) signed boldly by artist Kredel. Nice to find in both the slipcase AND the dust jacket. Printed and bound by the noted Hans Mardersteig of the Officina Bodoni. Laid in is an undated (early 1930s) 5″ X 6½” Autograph Note Signed from the secretary of introducer Thomas Craven sending (not present) Craven’s signature for affixing into an admirer’s copy of Craven’s 1931 book “Men of Art” — which includes much on Cellini.
